It's The Economy Stupid: Market Close

The U.S. stock market was up.  The rest of the world was a mixed bag of tricks.

U.S. stocks rose, erasing most of yesterday’s drop, as improving manufacturing data tempered concern about the economy and Facebook’s $19 billion purchase of messaging startup WhatsApp fueled optimism about deals.   The S&P 500 Index rose 0.6 percent, 11.03 points, to 1,839.78 after retreating yesterday following an early advance that took it within one point of its closing record. The Dow Jones Industrial Average increased 92.67 points, or 0.58 percent, to 16,133.23. Trading in S&P 500 stocks was 4.5 percent below the 30-day average.

The S&P 500 had slumped as much as 5.8 percent after reaching a record on Jan. 15 as investor concern about the Federal Reserve’s reductions in stimulus fueled a rout in emerging markets. It subsequently rose 5 percent from a Feb. 3 low through yesterday. Investors have been dismissing lower-than-forecast U.S. economic data over the past two weeks, pointing to harsh winter weather as a reason for unexpected weakness in reports from housing to hiring.

Fed Chair Janet Yellen said last week that the economy has strengthened enough to withstand continued cuts to monetary stimulus, adding that only a notable change in the outlook for the economy would prompt the central bank to slow the pace of tapering.  But Fed minutes released this week show that hawks on the Fed like St. Louis Fed President James Bullard think that the Fed should begin a debate now regarding raising interest rates as the economy returns to normal.

Natural Gas and Crude Oil sold off while Gold and Silver rose.  Bonds were off slightly, bond yields up slightly, but very slightly.  Not the kind of interest rate increase Bullard has in mind.
