It's The Economy Stupid: Jimmy Hoffa, Jimmy Buffett, Ben Bernanke, Market Close

-They still have not found Jimmy Hoffa.

-They still have not found Jimmy Buffett’s lost shaker of salt.

-The Fed leaves rates unchanged.

-The Fed did not reduce their $85 Billion of monthly purchases of bonds.

-The Fed sorta kinda thinking maybe it might could end QE by end of 2014.

-Ben Bernanke did not leave his job, despite Obama saying he’s stayed longer than he wanted.

Ben Bernanke speaks and the market drops.   I don’t think they liked what he said.

Stocks and Treasuries slid while the dollar rallied as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the central bank may reduce the pace of bond purchases later this year as economic risks subside.   The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index lost 1.38 percent to 1,628.93, a drop of -22.88 points, while 10-year Treasury yields jumped 15 basis points to 2.33 percent, the highest since March 2012. The Dollar Index, a gauge against six major peers, increased 1 percent to 81.41 as the U.S. currency strengthened against 14 of 16 major peers. Gold futures lost 1.3 percent to $1,348.80 an ounce, erasing an earlier 0.7 percent gain. Oil slipped 0.6 percent to $97.86 a barrel in extended trading.  Risks to the economic outlook and the labor market  have diminished, the Federal Open Market Committee said at the conclusion of a two-day meeting, repeating that it’s prepared to reduce or increase the pace of bond purchases depending on the outlook for jobs and inflation. The U.S. unemployment rate will fall to 6.5 percent to 6.8 percent by the end of 2014, Fed officials predicted, possibly reaching the central bank’s stated threshold to raise the benchmark lending rate.
